Wonderful music, beautiful venues, summer sunshine, fine wine and food, wild places……………………

The Adam Chamber Music Festival is a performance based international chamber music festival produced in Nelson, New Zealand every two years.

The festival features guest artists from overseas as well as leading artists from around New Zealand performing exciting chamber music works, many made possible by the musical collaborations created during the festival.

Audiences travel from around New Zealand and overseas to enjoy fantastic music in a variety of concert venues renowned for their acoustic properties. In addition, Nelson is an excellent host city with its selection a cafes, wineries, art galleries, beaches and wild places.

The Troubadours.

Following on from the success of the Adam Chamber Music Festival Troubadour Quartets in 2013 and 2015, the Festival is announcing an expansion of the programme to the non-Festival year.

The 2016 Troubadour String Quartet are Arna Morton - Violin, Rebecca Wang - Violin, Elyse Dalabakis - Viola, Francis Wong - Cello

The Troubadour's will accrue significant performance experience, both during the Adam Summer School and afterwards. The group will expand their skills in outreach concerts and in bringing both great chamber music as well as some lighter popular music to a wide audience. This training and experience will be of inestimable value in today’s music world, where outreach is becoming an ever more important part of every performing musician’s portfolio. We are very fortunate to be included in the mix of 3 days of very intensive performances around the region.

The 2016 group will have learnt the repertoire before arriving at the Summer School, as directed by the Artistic Directors of the Adam Chamber Music Festival, Helene Pohl and Gillian Ansell. During the Summer School, the group will receive coaching from the New Zealand String Quartet, not only on musical matters, but also on how to approach new audiences and unusual performance venues. Following the summer school the group will deliver three intensive performance days in the Nelson region. Outreach concerts will be performed in such places as streets, parks, schools, libraries, offices and old folks’ homes.

The Back Story to an amazing musical festival.

The Adam Chamber Music Festival began in 1992 with an enthusiastic group of professional musical friends performing five concerts over five days in Nelson. Their inspiration was to utilise the intimate, smaller venues of the region to recapture the essence of chamber music performance. Performed in the height of summer, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere offered a satisfying alternative to the more usual formal concert setting.

The Nelson Music Festival Trust was founded to run the 1994 Festival, secure its future, and administer its affairs. In 1995 the Festival became a biennial event, with the 2011 Festival being the 11th Adam Chamber Music Festival.
